Salt Springs Celebration to continue despite storm damage

The normally placid Fall Brook erupted from its banks. Sunday, Aug. 27, flooding picnic grounds and washing over a memorial bench before joining the equally raging Silver Creek. Together both waterways washed through the campgrounds at Salt Springs State Park.

Despite damage caused by Hurricane Irene, the annual Salt Springs Celebration will be held this Saturday as planned.

Stephen Spero, president of the Board of Directors of Friends of Salt Springs, said, “We are going to go on even though we will have to make some adjustments.”

One such adjustment will be made in parking. The supplemental parking lot will be repaired or relocated for the Celebration.

Spero said volunteers are also hustling to get the campground area back in shape.

“Labor Day weekend is traditionally busy for camping and we will meet the needs of our campers,” Spero said.

The picnic area is also being worked on this week, said the board president, “so people can sit down and enjoy a good meal and a good time.”

Spero said he had been told that water levels from the two creeks that run through the state park – Fallbrook and Silver Creek – almost matched the levels seen in flooding in June 2006.

He said the basements in both the Wheaton House and the rental house at Salt Springs took on about two and one-half feet of water.

Trails are open but have not yet been fully inspected. Anyone who sees downed trees on the trails are asked to report them at the park office.

“But right now we are focused on getting the main grounds in shape for the Celebration,” Spero said.

The Friends of Salt Springs manage 405 acres of state park land forPennsylvania.

Spero said, “We appreciate any help the state gives us but most of the maintenance and care for the state lands plus the Friends’ owned acres comes from the effort of volunteers.”
