The somber sounds of bagpipes and the thundering boom of a gun salute were heard Saturday morning outside the Harford Fire Company, where hundreds gathered to honor a fallen Marine as part of a memorial service.
Cpl. Chad M. Smith, 23, from Susquehanna County, was killed Oct. 10 when a vehicle struck him and other service members while they were running in formation at the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown base near Newport News and Virginia Beach, Va.
The crash is still under investigation and likely will be for months, said Ed Buice, a spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
In a chilly morning air, many Marines stood in silence outside the fire company on Fair Hill Road during the memorial service. Inside, even more Marines lined the rows of seats set up for family and friends.

Cpl. Smith was a graduate of Mountain View High School. He joined the Marine Corps on Jan. 12, 2009, and was promoted to the rank of corporal in February.
He lived in Virginia with his wife, Brianna Esslinger Smith of Kingsley.
More than 100 fellow Marines were on hand to pay their respects, as well as hundreds of family and friends along with police officers, local firefighters and representatives of other service organizations.
