Montrose Area couldn’t hold down the Lackawanna Trail offense at Lions Pride Stadium on Friday night as the Meteors faced a 42-6 loss from the Lions in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division III matchup.

Lackawanna Trail used a punishing ground game spearheaded by Eric Laytos to soften up an undermanned defense. Then they took to the air for some big pass plays as the Lions defeated Montrose.

Laytos was closing in on 1,000 yards rushing for the season and hit the mark in the second quarter on his sixth carry of the game. He did it in grand fashion as he bulled through the Montrose defense for a 25-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 14-0 lead.

Laytos finished with 115 rushing yards on just nine carries and two touchdowns in one half of play.

On Trail’s next two possessions, they took to the air and struck quickly.

On the first play of the drive, Caleb Darling hit Matt Aten on a crossing pattern, who took the ball 54 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.

On their next possession, Darling found Jonathon Zedar with a perfectly placed 27-yard scoring strike for a 28-0 lead.

On Montrose’s ensuing possession, Laytos sacked Meteors quarterback Dylan Heeman, forcing a fumble that was recovered at the 27-yard line by Josh Symuleski. Two plays later, Laytos ended his night with his second touchdown on an 8-yard run for a 35-0 halftime lead.

Lackawanna Trail again struck quickly when Zedar returned the second half kickoff for a 75-yard touchdown, putting the Lions comfortably ahead.

Trail’s defense swarmed Montrose ball carriers, holding the Meteors to just 12 yards rushing on 15 carries in the first half.

Montrose avoided the shutout when Will Ely broke free for a 39-yard scoring run with6:18left in the game.
