For the third year, a Veterans Day breakfast was prepared and served by members of the Leo Club, a high school service organization sponsored by the Hallstead-Great Bend Lions Club.

Following breakfast, the veterans – mostly members of the Hallstead American Legion Post 357 and the Great Bend VFW Post 6223 – spoke to elementary students about the day.

VFW Post 6223 Commander Ron Cranage said, “On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, guns fell silent and peace returned toEurope,” marking the end of World War 1.

Cranage told the students President Woodrow Wilson declared the day as Armistice Day – now known as Veterans Day.

“It is a day to thank and honor the veterans who walk among us,” Cranage said. “They leave home to do the work of patriots and come home to live quiet lives.”

American Legion and VFW members in attendance were introduced to the students; as were the auxiliary members attending from both organizations.

Willy Sollar, Post 6223 auxiliary president reminded the students, “When you see a veteran, say ‘Thank you,’ for all they have done.”
