Feed-a-Friend provides Thanksgiving help

Over 900 families inSusquenannaCountyreceived Thanksgiving turkeys and the trimmings through the annual Feed-a-Friend campaign.

Turkeys, along with food baskets, were distributed Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Trehab food banks in Montrose andOakland.

The annual campaign, sponsored by WNEP, Channel 16 provides local residents with Thanksgiving dinners and is coordinated locally through Trehab.

Trehab Food Bank director Lyn Senick said, “There is a lot of community support for the Feed-a-Friend drive.”

Area churches, schools and community organizations donate the food for the baskets each year.

Senick also said the order for turkeys is placed in August. “So there is a lot of planning involved.”

The Montrose Area Kiwanis Club and the high school Kiwanis sponsored Key Club helped out with running the distribution of the food.

The local food banks are run separate from the Feed-a-Friend program and with the holidays coming and children off from school, the pantries are in need of supplies, Senick said.

Items needed are things that help make complete meals, like pasta and sauces, macaroni and cheese and peanut butter are needed.

More expensive to purchase at the grocery store, protein foods are always in demand, she said.

“When people come in they are given two complete days worth of meals,” Senick said.

Non-food items, which can’t be purchased with food stamps, are also needed – like shampoos, shaving cream and laundry detergent – she added.
