Raider boys take Sayre tourney

The Blue Ridge boys’ basketball team capped the Sayre Tip-off Tournament crown on Saturday night with a 56-51 victory over Waverly after opening the tournament with a convincing 52-42 win over Sayre on Friday.

In the finals, Sawyer Dearborn scored 19 points and had eight rebounds while Chris Carlsen added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders.

Blue Ridgestarted off the game taking a 9-8 lead over Waverly after the first and held a 23-21 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Waverly took the lead away fromBlue Ridgewith an 18-11 run in the third to make the scored 39-34 going into the final minutes.

However,Blue Ridgeoutscored Waverly 22-12 in the fourth quarter to bring home the tournament championship.

Alex Cardoza added eight points for the Raiders while Mike Gathany had seven points and TJ Loomis chipped in six.

In Friday’s game,Dearbornhad 22 points and seven rebounds as the Raiders took home the opening game.

The Raiders paced the Sayre team 10-9 in the first quarter and 17-11 in the second to hold a 27-20 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Sayre came out to match the Raiders with 10 points in the third beforeBlue Ridgewould cap the win with an 11-6 run in the fourth.

Cardoza added 15 points, nine assists and five rebounds forBlue Ridgewhile Gathany had 12 and Carlsen dropped in two.

Susquehanna

The Susquehanna boys’ basketball team picked up a 61-43 victory at Afton (N.Y.) on Friday night in season-opening action.

Andrzej Tomczyk had 27 points and eight steals to lead Susquehanna.

The Sabers outscoredAftonin each of the first three quarters, 22-8, 14-6 and 17-4 to hold a 53-18 lead going into the fourth.

And despite a 25-8Aftonrun over the Sabers, Susquehanna took the victory.

Brandon Soden added 11 points for Susquehanna while J. Wheeler had nine, Dan Biegart had eight and Austin Cowperthwait had six.

Montrose

Montrose Area’s boys’ basketball team faced a 58-44 loss toRiversideon the road on Friday night in opening weekend action.

The Meteors were outscored 18-8 in the first quarter but pacedRiverside10-7 in the second to trail 25-18 at the half.

In third quarter action,Riversidepaced the Meteors 18-14, and then capped off the with a 15-12 fourth quarter.

Montrose was led by Colby Major with 16, while Cameron Dean scored 14, and Tom Lewis and Andrew Klein each had five points.

Elk Lake

ElkLake’s boys’ basketball team faced a 59-56 loss in the Red Wallace Memorial Scholarship game atElkLakeon Friday night.

ElkLakeopened up the first half to leadCarbondale14-13 in the first quarter, and saw the game tied at halftime at 23-23.

The Warriors opened the second half to paceCarbondale19-16 but after a 20-14 run by the Chargers in the fourth, the Warriors faced the loss.

ElkLakewas led by Rob Heft with 26 points while Nick Dudock had 14 and Matt Cuomo, Pete McGee and Tanner Reyan each had four points.

Mountain View

TheMountain Viewboys’ basketball team was handed a 45-23 loss to Wallenpaupack on the road on Friday night.

The Eagles were outscored 16-2 in the first and 9-4 in the second to see the team at a 25-6 deficit at the half.

After the break, ‘Paupack outscoredMountain View16-11 in the third and despite a6-4MountainView run in the fourth, the Eagles took the loss.

Mountain Viewwas paced by Joel Madas with nine points while John Chipelo, Nate Goodenough and Derek Bradley each had four points.

Forest City

TheForestCityboys’ basketball team faced a 47-35 loss toCarbondaleon Sunday in the team’s season opener.

The Foresters fell behind 7-5 after the first and were at a 25-11 deficit by halftime.

In the third quarter,ForestCitypaced the Chargers 13-7 but sealed the loss after being outscored 15-11 in the fourth quarter.

ForestCitywas paced by Noah Fedak with 14 points while David Cavalieri had eight and Vince DeLucy chipped in seven.
