Blue Ridge wrestler Zach Edwards took home a gold medal at 120 pounds on Saturday from the District II Class AA championships atLake-LehmanHigh School.
Edwards, a sophomore, defeated Meyers’ Justin Elick by a 5-4 decision to punch his ticket to regionals next weekend.
“I needed to get my strong spot on top, and I thought if I could do that I’d have a better shot at winning the match,” Edwards said. ‘Being here again was great, and it was even better coming out on top this time.”
Edwards’ teammate Tom Maby also qualified for regionals by placing third at 138 pounds with a win overHanover’s Dominic Vitale.
The Raiders tied for 11th out of 14 teams withElkLakewith 53 team points.
In addition to the Raider wrestlers,ElkLake’s Derrick Smith also qualified for the regional tournament at 145 pounds with a victory over Wyoming Area’s Ryan Filipiak in the third place match.
Montrose Area came in last with 10.5 points and missed out on qualifying any wrestlers for regionals.
The regional tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday atWilliamsportAreaHigh School.
Edwards (29-4) is a top seed and will take on Clint Vermilya (34-6) ofTroyHigh School, while Maby (17-8) will face Zack Green (33-2) ofNortheast Bradford.
ElkLake’s Smith (22-6) will face Adam Kritzer ofLineMountainin the first round.
