Just ask grandpa Cleo Teel of Dimock who spent $270 for the tasty treat at the pie auction during Friday’s 23rd Annual Dairy Day atElkLakeHigh School

Ali’s dad, Ron Teel, realized after the bidding got to $260 that there was no way he was going to outbid his dad.

And, so, he let him have it.

Such was the way of this year’s family friendly pie auction which cleared more than $4,000 for the first time ever and helped to feed the coffers of theSusquehannaCounty4-H Dairy Program and the Susquehanna County Dairy Princess Promotion Committee.

Even before the auction, Dairy Day coordinator Michelle Kowalewski proclaimed the show a huge success as some 72 exhibitors along with 15 community and health organizations shared their wares and helped area residents get back to their agricultural roots.

In addition to free ice cream dished up by the county’s dairy ambassadors, free health screenings were also available from the health fair exhibitors.

Classroom educational opportunities crossed the gamut from Lightning Strike Prevention, to Pesticides to the ‘Scoop on Poop’ which helped explain nutrient management plans for farmers with extra manure in their barns.

Harold Ely, 93, of Heart Lake, no longer keeps cows but he loves to come to the Dairy Day activity just to see old friends and get a read on the latest technologies.

“It’s quite a show,” he said, but acknowledged his wife would kill him if he paid the kind of prices that pies were fetching Friday.
