Phillips mines AA gold

Elk Lake’s Adam Phillips dominated his two individual events at the District II Class AA championships on Friday and Saturday at the Wilkes-Barre CYC.

Phillips, a senior, took first place in the 200 IM on Friday with a time of 2:00.11 and the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of :59.49.

His pair of wins punches his ticket for the PIAA Class AA championships starting Wednesday, Mar. 14, at Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, marking his third consecutive appearance at states.

“It feels great to win,” Phillips said on Friday after taking gold in the 200 IM. “I was a little disappointed with my time, I was hoping for 1:58, but it’s still good to win.”

Phillips said he was confident that he would have a shot at winning the race on Friday.

“I was confident and just went out there focused,” Phillips said. “It feels good to be going back to states.”

At states, Phillips said he is looking for a top three finish or better in both the 200 IM and in the 100 breaststroke.

Phillips also helped theElkLakeboys medal in the 400 free relay as Cody Mowry, Alex Manzek, Bradley Grosvenor and Phillips took second at 3:31.20, behindDallasat 3:20.59.

In the 200 medley relay, Phillips, Mowry, Matt Sterner and Grosvenor took third at 1:46.88, behind first place Holy Redeemer at 1:42.57.

In the 200 freestyle relay,ElkLake’s team of Sterner, Seth Carney, Codie Malloy and Manzek took fifth at 1:44.78, behindDallasin first at 1:31.56.

Other finishes for Elk Lake’s boys included Grosvenor (7th-200 IM, 10th-100 fly), Mowry (7th-50 free, 9th-100 back), Manzek (9th-100 free, 11th-50 free), Malloy (9th-100 back, 10th-500 free), Sterner (11th-200 free, 12th-100 fly), Seth Carney (15th-100 free), Corey Ross-Robertson (24th-100 free), Gabe Hamernick (25th-100 free).

On the girls’ side,ElkLake’s Abby Zdancewicz took a fourth place medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06.80, behind Scranton Prep’s Katie Voitik in first at 2:00.11.

Zdancewicz also narrowly missed a sixth place medal in the 500 free as she came up less than a second short finishing at 5:44.03, behind Valley View’s Vanessa LaTorre at 5:43.92. Taking first was Scranton Prep’s Maria Nonneneberg at 5:00.33.

Other performances fromElkLake’s girls included 200 medley relay (13th), Leah Ofalt (13th-50 free, 21st-100 breast), Rachel Grosvenor (16th-100 free, 24th-100 fly), Katie VanEtten (19th-100 fly), Sunny Griffiths (29th-50 free), 200 free relay (7th), Olivia Everitt (23rd-100 breast) and 400 free relay (7th).
