November races take shape

Although there were few contested primary races, voters took to the polls to cast votes in the April 24 election. Roughly 33 percent of registered Republicans and 20 percent of eligible Democratic voters turned out to cast ballots inSusquehannaCounty.

Republican incumbent state senator Gene Yaw bested primary opponent David Huffman in the 23rdSenatorial Districtrace. Yaw posted 1,899 votes to Huffman’s 595 inSusquehannaCounty.

Yaw will face Democratic challenger Luana Cleveland on the November ballot.Clevelandreceived 671 votes in the county.

110th District Republican incumbent Tina Pickett was unopposed in the primary and will also run unopposed in the General Election. Pickett posted 868 county votes.

In the 111th District race, GOP incumbent Sandra Major was unopposed garnering 3,191 votes inSusquehannaCounty.

She will face off in November against Democratic challenger Jeffrey Dahlander who received 1,079 votes in the county.

114th District Democratic incumbent Sid Michaels Kavulich received 91 votes. He is running unopposed in November.

Federal and Statewide races

In the Republican Presidential race, Mitt Romney carriedSusquehannaCountyand the state, netting 2,332 votes locally.

Incumbent and unopposed on Democratic ticket, President Barack Obama received 1,332 votes.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Bob Casey Jr. took 1,535 votes to challenger Joseph Vodvarka’s 147 in the county.

Casey will face Republican challenger Tom Smith in November. Smith tookSusquehannaCountywith 1,588 votes along with clinching the state nomination.

In the county, Smith won out over David Christian (470); Marc Scaringi (178); Steven Welch (774); and Sam Rohrer (1129).

In the 10th Congressional Race, Republican incumbent Tom Marino posted 3,792 votes inSusquehannaCounty.

Marino will be challenged on the November ballot by Philip Scollo who received 1,308 votes in the county.

Both Marino and Scollo were unopposed in the primary race.

Republican State Attorney General candidate David Freed will take on Kathleen Kane in November. Kane bested Patrick Murphy for the Democratic party nomination, tallying 1310 votes to Murphy’s 393 in the county. Freed was unopposed on the GOP ballot. He posted 3.628 votes in the county.

John Maher won the GOP race for Auditor General, in both the county and the state totals, over Frank Pinto, 2572-1186 in local votes. Maher will face Eugene DePasquale in the November election. DePasquale was unopposed posting 1,337 votes inSusquehannaCounty.

In the State Treasurer race, Diana Irey Vaughan will appear on the GOP ticket against Robert McCord on the Democratic ballot.Vaughanposted 3,646 votes in the county. McCord garnered 1,368.
