Tunkhannock’s running attack carried the load, but its seldom-used passing game ultimately sank Montrose.
Tigers sophomore quarterback Brian Beauchemin threw three passes and completed two – touchdown strikes of 51 and 60 yards – to lift Tunkhannock to a 28-18 win Friday in a nonleague game at Memorial Stadium.
“We run the wing-T so we run the ball an awful lot,” Tunkhannock coach Rod Azar said. “If you run the ball well during the game those plays open up because teams really condense on us. (Montrose) got caught a couple of times condensing and fortunately we called a play that worked.”
In the first quarter, Beauchemin hit Brett Stage for a 51-yard score to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Beauchemin added a 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Tunkhannock led, 14-0, at halftime.
Montrose cut into the lead late in the third quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by John Lawson. But Tunkhannock answered immediately when Beauchemin hit P.J. Dietz for a 61-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter. Montrose threw an interception on its first play of the ensuing drive and Josh Robinson scored on a 14-yard run to push the lead to 28-7.
Montrose rallied with a pair of touchdown runs by Lawson in the fourth quarter but Tunkhannock recovered two onside kicks to seal the win.
