Immediately following the Jan. 18 regular meeting of the Susquehanna County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, held in the Winter Garden at Elk Mountain Ski Resort, Uniondale, the board held its annual meeting.
A slate of officers was presented by the nominating committee chairman Paul Lukus and unanimously elected: Chairman Joseph Matis; Vice Chairman Paul Lukus; Treasurer Robert Bartron; Secretary Jerry Cronk. James “Ken” Adams is also a member of board.
Following the dinner Executive Director Karen Allen introduced three employees who were honored for years of service: Tim Canfield for ten years of service as maintenance man at Turnpike Terrace Apartments; Pam Rockwell for five years of service as Management Aide at Turnpike Terrace and Prospect Park Apartments; Frank Hobbs for five years of service as maintenance man at Prospect Park Apartments.
Besides the SCHRA board; present and retired employees and their guests; were representatives from the A&E Group, the engineering firm for the newest housing project in New Milford, Tom and Jude Cooney, Dean Butler and Wally Poplawski; Doug Trumbower for the contractor Trade Eastern, also the New Milford project; Commissioner Alan Hall; Attorney Sam Lewis; Architect Gene Beautz.
Bobbie Joe Turner gave the monthly Redevelopment Authority report that included work being in progress or completed in many areas of the county that included the Tri-Boro area, Susquehanna, Oakland and Lanesboro; Hop Bottom; Hallstead and Forest City. The work covered demolitions, paving, housing rehab; handicap accessibility work; sewer line cleaning and manhole restoration. According to Turner, the Community Development Block Grant application in the amount of $225,000 has been approved to assist low income families of Forest City with replacement of their laterals in association with the sewer replacement project in the borough. They have also received approval for $411,000 in Impact Fee money for county rental unit rehabilitation.
The board heard a report on the status of each housing project covered by the Housing Authority. Turnpike Terrace in Susquehanna/Lanesboro is 100 percent leased with six names on the waiting list; William Penn Apartments in Forest City has two vacancies with one underage application being processed; Prospect Park Apartments, Susquehanna has one vacancy with one tenant being processed; Howard Emerson Apartments, Hallstead has one vacancy that is being updated for a February lease; Emerson Southgate, Hallstead is 100 percent leased with 10 names on the waiting list; Harford Village Apartments, Harford is 100 percent leased with one name on the waiting list.
The board voted to ratify the three year trash removal contracts for Joe’s Disposal and Franceski Waste.
Mrs. Allen provided the board with an update on the construction of the elderly housing in New Milford. “The roof trusses will be delivered the week of Jan. 21 and the project is expected to be closed in by the end of the month,” she said.
