The Forest City girls’ basketball team was handed a 50-26 loss in the District II Class A finals on Wednesday night in coach Carl Urbas’ final game as head coach of the Lady Foresters.
At Lackawanna College, Old Forge sophomore forward Tori Tansley scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds – six offensive – as Old Forge won its second straight crown and fifth in the last six years, pulling away in the final 11½ minutes.

Forest City (12-10) trailed by 14 early in the third quarter before Cassandra Bendyk hit two free throws, Michaela Martines buried a 3-pointer and Kylie Borick hit a free throw, slicing the deficit to 26-18 with 3:46 left in the third.

That’s when Tansley took over, scoring the next six for the Lady Devils, who improved to 24-0.

“The Tansley girl did hurt us,” Urbas said. “She kept banging, banging, banging.

“It was like a David and Goliath, and we were David there for a few minutes. It was an uphill climb.”

She was too powerful to handle inside. Taking a bounce pass from Vicky Lee, Tansley ripped the ball away from a defender and went up strong, completing a three-point play. She added a baseline runner with nine seconds left in the quarter to stretch the lead to 32-20.

She scored five second-half points off free throws following offensive rebounds.

Borick’s baseline drive cut the lead to 32-22 on the first possession of the third quarter, but Rhyan Barnic buried a 3 – one of six Old Forge players to connect from long distance – and Tansley and Carey scored the next six at the foul line before Barnic’s layup pushed the lead to 43-23 with under four minutes to play.

Bendyk paced Forest City with 12 points, but Old Forge’s Teri Vieira, who had four steals, and Lee did a terrific job harassing Forest City’s leading scorer, Carly Erdmann. She was held to just three points on 1 for 5 shooting.
