Blue Ridge says ‘yes’ to gas

BY STACI WILSON

The Blue Ridge School District has joined on with a local natural gas distribution company and will serve as an anchor account in the New Milford area.

At the April 2 school board meeting, the district agreed to participate with Leatherstocking Gas Company LLC.

“The big benefit will be to the community,” said Superintendent Robert McTiernan at the board’s work session on March 25.

He also said that there would be an upfront cost to the conversion from fuel oil to natural gas but that over the long run, the district would realize savings.

The district plans to keep it wood-chip burning system which heats the schools during very cold weather.
In other business, the board approved Jill Hoffman to continue serving as the district athletic director for the 2013-14 school year at a salary of $7,000.

The board also accepted, with regret, the resignation of Terry Rought from the maintenance department effective March 18.

Alicia Ross was hired to serve as the Fitness Center Supervisor for the remainder of the year during the afterschool open hours, Monday-Thursday, with a compensation set at $700.
