As members of American Legion Post 86 and its Auxiliary members, Boy Scouts from Troop 81, all of Susquehanna, gathered on Flag Day, June 14, at the Susquehanna Fire Department for a dignified disposal of unserviceable American flags.
The worn and faded flags have flown over the graves of those who served their country in all branches of the armed forces and those died serving their country.
Post 86 also collects worn and faded flags year round from anyone wishing to have them disposed of in a dignified manner.
According to the service for the retired flags, they have been replaced by new flags. Members of Veterans organizations are pledged to let no grave of those who served be unhonored or unmarked.
The fire for the disposal of these flags deemed unserviceable was burning in a pit behind the fire station and following the presentation of these flags by a member of the Boy Scouts for final inspection by Legion members, they were burned.
The service concluded with a prayer by Post 86 Chaplain Stan Lindow and bugler Joe Kapcsandi playing “To the Colors.”
