Montrose’s David Gardner has been wrestling for nine years and he is the Independent’s Student Athlete of the Week.

Gardner, a senior, started wrestling because “I wanted to try a new sport and I loved it. I like being the only person that can determine how you perform.”

He reports that his season hasn’t started out how he would have liked it to, but says that he will be working hard to improve.

Even with the slow start, he feels that his team should do well. “I think this season will go better than past years because we have more members and great coaches.” Having more wrestlers on the team helps out because there will be less forfeits for weight classes. This will mean the team has the possibility to earn more points.

Gardner also played football for the Meteors and played baseball in the past. He enjoys riding his horse and spending time outdoors. He has been active in the Susquehanna County 4-H program for the past four years raising pigs.

After graduation Gardner plans to attend Johnson College to become an electrical lineman. He lives in Forest Lake Township with his parents, Chris and Virginia Gardner.
