Kidnapping suspect apprehended

Pennsylvania State Police, Gibson, took a man into custody May 1 after he allegedly kidnapped his four-year-old son during a supervised foster care visitation in Cortland, N.Y.

Police in New York issued an Amber Alert for the four-year-old boy after Shane Whitfield Sr., 57, Port Richey, Fla., left with the child during a supervised visitation. Police in New York said Whitfield has a lengthy history of violence.

It was believed by police that Whitfield was traveling south in a silver Nissan Frontier with Florida plates.

Troopers from PSP, Gibson observed the vehicle near milemarker 209 in Lenox Twp. and initiated a traffic stop.

The child was unharmed.

The Amber Alert was issued at about 2:50 p.m.; with PSP taking him into custody at about 4:15 p.m.

Whitfield was charged with Arrest Prior to Requisition. He was arraigned in Clifford District Court and remanded to the Susquehanna County Correctional Facility with bail set at $150,000.

Charges pending against Whitfield in New York include custodial interference, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment.
