A longtime varsity boys’ basketball coach is stepping down for Elk Lake’s 2016-17 winter sports season. Superintendent Ken Cuomo announced during the school board meeting Thursday that John Warnero, varsity boys head basketball coach, will not be returning to this position next year.

Cuomo said that Warnero’s decision not to re-apply as varsity basketball coach was because of his changing role as he moved into the assistant principal position from dean of students and athletic director.

In a letter, Warnero cited his responsibilities with many of the athletic programs and that his parental relationship with his own growing children required some changes in priorities.

Cuomo said, “I do appreciate all he has done for the athletics program and for the kids at Elk Lake. He has a great personality, is great with kids and a great role model.”

School board president Arden Tewksbury agreed. “It is nice to have coaches who have a positive impact on young players.”

After the meeting it was confirmed that Rich Emmons of Springville will be taking over the varsity boys basketball coach position for the 2016-17 season.

Emmons is an Elk Lake graduate who played for the varsity team in his high school years.
