Baseball all-stars annouced

Montrose Shortstop Nick Warriner blistered Lackawanna League Division IV baseball pitching all spring and people took notice.

Warriner led local baseball player post season accolades as he was selected to the Lackawanna League Division IV all-star team as a shortstop and selected to the Scranton Times-Tribune All Regional team.

Warriner batted .491, including a .520 clip in league play, on 25 hits while scoring 25 runs and driving in 15 with 8 doubles. He also earned two wins on the mound for the Meteors who advanced to the District II semifinals.

“I was excited and honored to be selected all-region,” said Warriner.

Warriner attributed his success to extensively working out during the offseason and perfecting his swing throughout the season.

Not resting on his laurels Warriner is currently competing with the East Coast Sandhogs and will continue to add to his game.

“I will continue to work on adding power to my swing and continue to grow in the field,” added Warriner.

Several local players joined Warriner on the Division IV All-Star team, including teammate Andrew Rapisardi.

The senior third basemen and pitcher led the division in RBIs with 16 while batting .352 and finishing second to Warriner in hits and runs. He also earned three wins on the mound while striking out 20.

District II champion Blue Ridge placed four members on the team as Jeff Zawiski was named as a pitcher and was joined by batterymate Adam Roe; second basemen Coleman McCain; and outfielder Kaleb Folk.

Zawiski had three wins in league play while striking out 46 batters and boasting a 1.45 ERA. He also earned two more wins in the postseason as the Raiders captured the District II Class 2A championship. He batted .340 on the season and scored 14 runs.

Roe was stellar behind the plate catching the Blue Ridge staff while hitting .348 and driving in 12 RBIs. The senior catcher provided several clutch hits in the playoffs including two hits in the district final.

McCain burst on the scene as a freshman pounding out 18 hits for a .400 average in league play and setting the table as the team’s leadoff hitter.

Folk was selected as an outfielder after hitting .326 on the year and adding two wins as a pitcher for the Raiders. He also served double duty as a member of Blue Ridge’s league-winning volleyball team.

Elk Lake had two representatives on the team as Nate Pettyjohn was selected as first basemen and infielder/pitcher and Joe McAleer was selected as a designated hitter.

McAleer led the league in doubles with nine while hitting .400 on 18 hits and driving in 12 RBIs. He also earned a win on the mound and fanned 13 hitters.

Pettyjohn batted .333 in league play and drove in 12 runs. He also had two wins on the hill for the Warriors while striking out 29.

The teams were rounded out by Forest City outfielder Tyler Clift and three members of league champion Lackawanna Trail including Player of the Year Pitcher Nate Rolka, outfielder Jordan Edwards, and utility player Noah Coleman.

Local players earning Honorable Mention included Blue Ridge’s Tyler Hillard and Jacob Goff, Elk Lake’s Christian Salsman and Zach Grovesnor, Forest City’s Gabe Zukosky, Montrose’s Ethan Hitchcock, Mountain View’s Caden Scott, Michael DeWolfe, and Mike Fanelli, and Susquehanna’s Garrett Decker and Devon Dubanowitz.
