Area cross country teams completed their regular season as the District II championships loomed in the horizon.
Today’s District II Championships at Lakeland High School will feature several contenders from local teams.
In the girls’ race scheduled for 2pm Elk Lake’s Krista Jones, the reigning District II Class A champion is one of the favorites along with Forest City’s Rachel Korty. Montrose’s Hannah Perkins, the only runner to defeat Jones this season, and Elk Lake’s Sadie Bosscher look to work some magic in their final District II race while underclassmen Kathryn Long of Mountain View and Montrose Freshman Paige Brewer look to make some noise.
Perkins and Brewer lead a Montrose team that looks to contend for the team title while Elk Lake hopes to ride high finishes from Jones and Bosscher. Blue Ridge, led by Gia Fiore, has come on recently and looks to surprise.
Elk Lake’s Jones won her sixth straight league race and set a course record at Lackawanna Trail as the Lady Warriors claimed three victories in the final league match.
Jones crossed the finish line in 19:32 to establish the record. She was followed by Montrose’s Perkins who finished at 19:48 and Paige Brewer who crossed at 20:30. Bosscher finished fourth at 20:32 while Long was fifth with a time of 20:36.
Montrose claimed four wins at the meet as Perkins and Brewer were joined by Stephanie Summerville (7th/21:28) and Annika Bixby (14th/23:28) in the top 15.
Blue Ridge also picked up three wins as Gia Fiore led the way with a tenth-place finish in 22:36. She was joined by teammates Cameron Robinson (11th/22:40) and Lily Bleck (15th/23:35) in the top 15.
Genevieve Larkin (12th/22:43) joined Long in the top 15 as the Lady Eagles dropped three matches. Susquehanna also suffered three losses.
Korty finished first in a time of 20:25 to lead Forest City to three wins in a meet held at Western Wayne.
