Susquehanna Mayor dies

Susquehanna Mayor Denise Reddon lost her battle to cancer on Sunday at Barnes-Kasson Hospital.

Reddon, 58, was in her second term as mayor. She was first elected in 2005 and was re-elected in 2009.
As borough solicitor, Myron Dewitt said he had worked with Reddon on several projects over the past few years and found the mayor to be down-to-earth and accessible.
Dewitt said, “She’s done an excellent job. She was very involved and very concerned about the community. I’m sorry we’ve lost a good person who has made a lot of contributions to the community.”
As mayor, Reddon headed the community’s police department.
Dewitt said she was involved in discussions to consolidate police services with Lanesboro and Oakland Borough.
She also took an active role in River Bounty’s ongoing work to get the dam fixed and generating power again, said Dewitt.
“She was a hands-on mayor. You could call her anytime – day or night. It’s not an easy job,” Dewitt said.
Chairman of the Susquehanna Community Development Association Darlene Slocum said, “Denise was very dedicated and involved in our community. As mayor of Susquehanna, she strongly believed in the ongoing improvement projects and worked with our organization to facilitate change. Denise was proud of our community and had a lifetime of service.”
Reddon was also a health and physical education teacher and athletic director for 27 years in the Susquehanna Community School District.
Susquehanna Community Superintendent Bronson Stone said, “Denise Reddon was a wonderful person who did an outstanding job as a teacher, coach and athletic director. It’s rare that you find someone who can always get the job done, show compassion and is liked by everyone and that was Denise. I’m going to miss her.”
Visitation will be held tonight, Wednesday, July 28 at Hennessey Funeral Home.
Services will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Jackson St., Susquehanna, on Thursday at 10 a.m.
