A Susquehanna County home was gutted by fire Thursday morning displacing a family of six.

Montrose United Fire Co. Chief Preston Sprout said that the home of Wesley and Denise Freeman on Hess Road in Dimock Township was fully engulfed when crews arrived on the scene shortly after 7:30 a.m.

He said that the cause of the fire could not be determined because of the extent of the damage, and that firefighters initially had to deal with an ice covered road and problems accessing water.

After consulting with the fire marshal, Sprout said he ruled the fire accidental.

Susquehanna County American Red Cross spokesman Stephen McHenry said that four adults and two children were getting assistance with food, clothing and prescriptions, but that the family members were being taken in by others in the community.

Fire companies from Springville, Elk Lake and Hop Bottom and an emergency response team from the Montrose Minutemen assisted at the scene where no injuries were reported.
