Sabers defeated in Class A title game

Susquehanna’s boys’ basketball team was handed a 47-24 loss from Old Forge at the District II Class A championship game on Friday night at Carbondale.

The win was Old Forge’s fifth consecutive title.

Susquehanna fell behind early as the Blue Devils outscored them 15-7 in the first quarter, and 8-5 in the second to put the Sabers behind 23-12 at halftime.

After the half, Old Forge continued to lead the way as the Blue Devils paced Susquehanna 14-5 in the third, and capped off the game with a 10-7 run in the fourth.

Andrzej Tomczyk scored a team-high 10 points for Susquehanna (8-16), which played Antietam in a play-in game Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

“We’re a young team and we’re learning how to play,” Susquehanna coach Scott Glidden said. “They’ve improved throughout the year and I’m proud of them, we’ve just got more to learn.”

Taylor Cundy added six for Susquehanna while Austin Cowperthwait chipped in five points.

Also last week, Susquehanna took a 49-44 victory over MMI Prep at Pittston Area on Tuesday night in a District II Class A semifinal game.

The Sabers fell to an early disadvantage as MMI Prep held a 10-8 after the first quarter.

Susquehanna would outscore MMI in the second, 11-10, but were still at a 20-19 deficit at halftime.

However, after halftime, Susquehanna came out to pace MMI 16-11 in the third quarter to hold a 35-31 lead going into the fourth.

The Sabers then capped off the victory with a 14-13 mark in the fourth quarter.

Cole Mallery scored 17 points to lead Susquehanna. Cundey added 12 points and Tomczyk added eight.
