Thompson plays for Phillies in spring training win

RICH THOMPSON

Montrose graduate Rich Thompson, a member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization, who most recently played for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in AAA last season, was a part of the Phillies split squad during a spring training game on Sunday.

Thompson, 31, helped the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Clearwater, Fla.

He came in to play center field in the top of the sixth, replacing Shane Victorino.

In the top of the seventh, Tampa Bay’s Tim Beckham hit a line drive single to center, and after scooping up the ball, Thompson made a throwing error allowing Beckham to go to second base.

Thompson batted in the bottom of the eighth, and hit a pop up foul to Tampa catcher Nevin Ashley.

He is currently listed on Lehigh Valley’s active roster for 2011 as an outfielder.
