More parking meters proposed in Montrose

BY STACI WILSON

People who find available parking in the small number of free spaces on Lake Ave., along the Green in Montrose, may soon be feeding a meter.

Montrose Council discussed, at the Monday, Apr. 4 meeting, a move to amend the borough parking meter ordinance.

Council talked about adding a few more metered spaces on Lake Ave. Currently, there are five meters that run halfway up the block from Maple.

Beyond the metered parking, some vehicles are parked in the free spaces for the entire workday.

Council is also looking at the possibility of removing one metered space in the borough.

Council also discussed removing the first, southbound space on South Main to add turning room for the number of large trucks turning onto the street from Rt. 706.

The borough approved $2,500 in budgeted funds to go toward the next phase of the Montrose Restoration Committee’s streetscape project. The project will update the walks along Church St.

New sidewalks, curbs, antique street lighting and planters were installed along Public Ave. and Maple St. in 2009 during the first phase of the committee’s project.

Council voted to change the agency that is responsible for collecting the borough’s one percent earned income tax.

Central Tax came in with a lower bid for service than the company that currently handles the collection, Berkheimer Associates.

The change in EIT collectors will go into effect Jan. 1, 2012.
