New Milford to consider map change

BY STACI WILSON

New Milford is moving forward on its quest to help bring senior housing to the community.

A map change request hearing for 682 Church St., the site of the former Southern Tier Plastics building, will be held Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m., just before the monthly borough council meeting begins.

The proposed map change would designate the property as developmental zone which would allow for apartments as well as residential homes.

The borough’s zoning hearing board will reconvene May 9, at 7 p.m., regarding a variance to change the Church St. property’s zoning designation.

Currently, the lot falls in an industrial zone that is surrounded by residential zone.

If those changes are put in place, Susquehanna County Housing and Redevelopment Authority can move forward with the demolition and removal of the Southern Tier Plastics building.

SCHRA acquired the building in late December 2010.

The agency would like to construct a 24-unit apartment building for seniors on the site.

At the April 7 meeting, council also discussed “skateboard junk” being brought into Mid Town Park.

Skateboarders have been allowed to use the tennis court areas but council has asked the area be maintained and free of junk, such as sofas, for the boarders to continue using the site.
