Susquehanna hears about Viaduct Biway

Susquehanna Borough Council learned Tuesday, April 5, about what the designation  Viaduct Valley Way Scenic Byway.

Alice Deustch said the 37.3 mile stretch of highway between Lanesboro and Nicholson will be eligible for funds to enhance tourism and community and economic development.

She said the group is seeking financial and volunteer support from municipalities in both Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties and others to meet a 20 percent matching fund for a Corridor Management Plan.

Council agreed to donate $500 pending final presentation at the next council meeting on April 19.

In other business, council hired Jim Tarbox as a parks employee.

Council also agreed to take $5,000 from the sale of a backhoe and place against the loan for the new backhoe. Street Commissioner Steve Glover advised council asphalt would be available on April 11 and street repair could then begin.

Aaron Gould, a representative of International Silica,  a business showing interest in the area, was on the agenda but was unable to attend due to illness.

Codes Enforcement Officer Mary Weaver reported to council she has issued 26 tickets and most violators have complied.

She also reported many complaints concerning pets. The borough has an ordinance pertaining to pet owners responsibility for cleaning up after their pets. Weaver said the fine is clearly stated in the ordinance and will be enforced.

Weaver said it is the property owners responsibility to remove the old house numbers and to affix the new numbers.

Another problem addressed was the accumulation of trash on porches and around properties. Weaver said she is presently working with the people but intends to see the ordinances enforced.

Council also approved the relocation of a stop sign on West Main Street.
