Warriors capture Lackawanna League titles

Elk Lake used some creative tinkering in its lineup and captured the coveted boys’ and girls’ Lackawanna League Div. III championships Monday.

Sean Carney, who has been battling an injury, came through with a key win and Mike Bedell, a distance runner, dropped down to the 400-meter run to give the Warriors an emotional lift in an 89-61 win over Blue Ridge in boys’ action while the girls won, 113-34.

BOYS TRIUMPH

Elk Lake moved to 6-0 and won its first outright division title after sharing the last two with Mid Valley.

“This is a big one,” Elk Lake coach Will Squier said. “We really wanted to come through this year winning this. I expected this to be a battle. And it was.”

GIRLS UNDEFEATED

Elk Lake’s girls also finished the season undefeated, beating Blue Ridge 113-34. Cassie VanEtten tied a school record in winning the 800 and was part of the winning 1600 relay team for the Lady Warriors, who won their second title in the last four years.
