Elk Lake’s girls topped Susquehanna County teams taking 10th in the PIAA District 2 Junior High Track championships Saturday at a rainy Scranton Memorial Stadium.
Although Elk Lake was the top team finish, there were some extraordinary individual efforts on the day.
Elk Lake’s Jenny VanEtten grabbed the gold in the 800 meters and 1600 meters, and Blue Ridge’s Katherine Kempa took fourth in the 400 meters.
On the boys’ side, Elk Lake’s Matthew Woolcock took silver while Montrose’s Troy Ely took seventh in the triple jump.
BOYS
Coughlin won the boys title with 68 points out of 29 teams. Elk Lake was 20th with nine points, and Montrose was 27th with two points.
Among Elk Lake’s top finishes:
*Matthew Woolcock finished second in the triple jump at 37-9.25, 14.5 inches behind Abington Heights’ Zack Bird;
*Woolcock finished seventh with a height of 5-4 in the high jump, 8.5 inches behind Northwest’s Tyler Burger.
*Woolcock finished ninth in the long jump at 17-4.75, 20 inches behind Delaware Valley’s Lex Rosario.
*The 4×800 meter relay team of Cooper Cole, Jesse Gouin, Hunter Bedell, Eddie Cumens and Dalton Sherman finished ninth at 9:40.16, less than 28 seconds behind Lakeland
Among Montrose’s top finishes:
*Troy Ely finished seventh in the triple jump with a 36-4.5, as Abington Heights’ Zack Bird took first at 38-11.75.
Blue Ridge’s Katherine Kempa poured it on in the eighth heat of the 100 meter dash, but lost by three-tenths of a second to Wyoming Area’s Jillian Spak. She just missed the cut with a time that was 14th best across all nine heats of the 100 meters. Kempa finished 4th in the 400 meters, and eighth in the javelin. STAFF PHOTO/ROBERT BAKER
GIRLS
Abington Heights won the girls title with 80 points out of 30 teams. Elk Lake was tenth with 21 points, Blue Ridge finished in 20th with nine points and Susquehanna was 29th with one point.
Top finishes:
*800 meters: Elk Lake’s Jenny VanEtten took first with a time of 2:27.05; Susquehanna’s Ivy Christensen took eight place at 2:35.60.
*1600 meters: VanEtten took first with a time of 5:29.56; Blue Ridge’s Casey Purdum took sixth with a time of 5:43.77.
*400 meters: Blue Ridge’s Katherine Kempa took fourth place with a time of 1:03.44. Top finisher was North Pocono’s Kaitlyn Lewis at 1:00.1.
*Montrose’s 4×800 relay team of Angela Russell, Kaylee Russell, Emma Washo and Hunter Richmond took seventh at 11:04.35. Top finisher was North Pocono at 10:18.26.
*Long jump: Montrose’s Madelyne Pasteka took seventh place at 14-2, while Meteor teammate Hannah Dieck took eighth at 14-1.5. Top finisher was Pittston’s Olivia Giambra at 15-5.
*Javelin: Blue Ridge’s Kempa took eighth place at 76-8. Top finisher was Lake-Lehman’s Spencer Cayle at 100-5.
*3200 meters: Elk Lake’s Makenzie Jones took eighth place with a time of 12:42.57. Top finisher was Dallas’ Ally Rome at 11:50.71.
*Elk Lake’s 4×400 meter relay team of Jenny VanEtten, Rachel Manzek, Katie Bennett, Austin Graham and Leah Ofalt took 11th with a time of 4:42.26. Top finisher was Wallenpaupack at 4:17.59.
