Montrose Area’s salutatorian said she couldn’t even pronounce the title she earned before she was told she was to speak at commencement.

But Mary Catherine Fruehan practiced and pulled it off flawlessly at Saturday’s commencement exercises held at the high school stadium.

Although she excelled academically, Fruehan said that she and her fellow graduates were more than numbers and test scores.

“How do you measure kindness, compassion and respect?” she asked. “The people here see us for who were are and not just a grade.”

She said some people describe the younger generation as selfish and apathetic, but she continued, “We have come to school every day knowing people here care. They know we have something to offer that can make a difference,” Fruehan said.

In a speech peppered with science and Star Wars, valedictorian Thomas Jordan also spoke highly of his Montrose high school experience and offered the class advice for the future.

He told them that no matter what situation they faced in life there were only two possible outcomes – success or failure.

With that in mind, he told his classmates to always “push forward” and do their utmost.
