Mountain View School District graduation

Mountain View High School Principal Andrew Doster pronounced the 2011 graduating class “had arrived,” Saturday morning and he was sure they would be ready to venture out into the world.

Doster told the graduates dressed in their blue, orange and white caps and gowns, “You are the reason I get up in the morning telling myself I have the greatest job one could ever ask for.”

Class president and salutatorian Greg Adams choked back the tears as he said, “They always say you never get a second chance to make a first impression.”

But, he added, “We have plenty of first impressions to make now, whether it’s at a new job or college.”

Adams reminded his classmates that it’s important to take personal responsibility for the things one can control, abut “don’t try to figure it all out now, and don’t swim upstream.”

Valedictorian Michael Purdy did his own looking back, commenting that when he first started school he wished the school day would last until 5 p.m.

“Things have changed since then, though,” he quipped.

Purdy offered a different perspective on his memories of high school.

Claiming that he hadn’t participated in the same things most of the class did, he said that he’ll still have just as many memories.

“I didn’t go on the senior trip,” he noted.  “I wasn’t that much of an outgoing person.  I didn’t do what other kids did. I didn’t know all of you.  But you still had an impact on me.”

Purdy suggested that his classmates need to make the right choices in the future.

“Making the right choices is the most important thing.  But don’t choose based on the short term.  Don’t take the easy way.  Go the extra mile. Be hardworking.”

Most importantly, he advised, “be honest.”
