During the Susquehanna Community School District board meeting on Oct. 19, Superintendent Bronson Stone along with acting board president Jason Chamberlain presented Community Service Awards to Cathy Corse, Debbie Benson and Don Norris for their hours and hours of work providing a shelter for those displaced by the recent flood.
“Once again the district has lived up to its name, ‘Community’ as these threee employees worked tirelessly to help reduce the stress people were under during the time they were displaced,” Stone said.
As the head of maintenance, Norris supervised the setting up of the shelter while Corse and Benson provided endless meals for those who took advantage of the shelter at the school complex.
It was also reported the superintendent also spent many hours at the school to make sure everything necessary was provided to those who took advantage of the shelter.
The district received a thank you letter from the American Red Cross for the use of the facility as a shelter. Secreatry Evelyn Cottrell also read a letter of thanks to the board from the Susquehanna Fire Company for their participation in honoring those who were responsible for saving the life of Cori Glidden.
Before the meeting was called to order the board appointed Jason Chamberlain President Pro Tempore in the absence of President Steven Stanford and Vice-president Clay Weaver. As Chamberlain was taking his seat Weaver arrived but declined the position as president as Chamberlain was already seated.
A book by the late Russell Criddle, a local resident, has been donated to the high school library by Ed Criddle. “Although blind, Russell Criddle saw the beauty of life,” Stone said.
Principal Robert Keyes informed the board elementary students will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week again this year. The activities during the week send a No Drug Use message to the students, Keyes said.
Keyes also reported the After School Tutoring Program has begun with 46 students signed up with an average of 35 per day taking advantage of this program.
Kathleen Hinkley, teacher representative to board, spoke to the board about the Holiday Dinner the faculty and staff are planning as a community project. The dinner, scheduled for Nov. 19, from1to4 p.m.is open to the community. Hinkley said they are looking into transportation for the residents of Turnpike Terrace. This event is being well advertised with flyers posted around the area.
Hired to fill teacher and substitute teacher positions for the after school tutoring program were: Jennifer Rockwell, Stephen Nayduch, Lisa Carpenter, Karyn Armitage, Daniel Maurer, Carolyn Homer and Debra Stone. Added to the substitute list were: Jacqueline Waldron, Jacqueline Ferenzi, Ryan Gilleran, Patti Schmidt (bus driver), William Schmidt (bus driver), Lisa Carpenettin (bus driver). Approved to fill volunteer positions were: William Szili and Kimberly Marco. Patrick O’Brien was approved as a disrict bus driver.
The board approved a 90-day sabbatical for John Seigle effective October 24. Lori Zick was approved as a 91-day long-term substitute teacher effective Oct. 21.
Among the many requests for use of the school facilities came from the Endless Mountain Theatre Company for a Christmas Varity Show, Dec. 9-11.
