Warriors win Susq. Co. Christmas tourney

Elk Lake’s boys’ basketball team was the 2011 Susquehanna County Christmas Tournament champion, defeating Blue Ridge on Thursday night at Susquehanna, 53-44. The Elk Lake Warrior boys’ basketball team brought home the trophy from the Susquehanna County Christmas Basketball Tournament on Thursday night with a 53-44 victory overElkLake.

Rob Heft scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Warriors in the championship game and was named Most Valuable Player.

Matt Cuomo had 13 points and six rebounds forElkLakewhile Tanner Reyan had seven assists and Nick Dudock had 12 rebounds.

The game was a close battle throughout the first half asBlue Ridgehad a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and went into halftime leading 27-26.

Blue Ridgeremained in the lead after the third where each team scored 10 points. However,ElkLakeran away with the win with a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter.

Alex Cardoza and Sawyer Dearborn each scored 12 points to pace the Raiders while Chris Carlsen added seven.

In the consolation game, Montrose claimed third place with a 52-36 victory over Susquehanna as Cameron Dean scored 22 points to lead the Meteors while Tom Lewis added 17 points.

The Sabers were led by Andrzej Tomczyk with 12 points while Mark Zappe had seven.

In addition to Heft, members of the all-tournament team includedElkLake’s Cuomo,Blue Ridge’s Cardoza, Susquehanna’s Tomczyk and Montrose’s Tom Lewis.

On opening night,Blue Ridgegrabbed a 76-60 victory over Montrose Area to move into Thursday’s finals.

Cardoza had 20 points, 14 assists and seven steals to lead Blue Ridge to the victory while Dearborn scored a game-high 26 points for the Raiders.

The game was tight through the first quarter as Blue Ridge edged the Meteors 15-14, before increasing their lead in the second with an 18-12 run to hold a 33-26 lead at the break.

In the second half, The Raiders used a big 33-19 third quarter to seal the win despite a 15-10 Montrose run in the fourth.

Mike Gathany added 12 forBlue Ridgewhile Carlsen had six.

Pacing Montrose was Lewis, who scored 20 points while Andrew Klein had 15 and Corey Adams had seven.

Also on Tuesday,ElkLakegrabbed a 53-39 win over Susquehanna as Dudock scored 15 points to lead the Warriors.

ElkLakegrabbed an early 12-7 lead after the first but saw their lead taken with a 14-6 run by the Sabers in the second to see Susquehanna lead 21-18 at the half.

However, the Warriors proved the stronger team as they outscored Susquehanna 17-9 in the third and 18-9 in the fourth to take the win.

Cuomo and Heft each added 10 points for the Warriors while Reyan and Tyler Arnold each had six.

Tomczyk led Susquehanna with 20 points while Austin Cowperthwait had nine and Dan Biegert added six.
