Ron Barankovich and Debbie Lewis found out last week what it really means to be “Big Losers.”

Barankovich, 69, of Hop Bottom, lost 20 pounds in a 12-week “Biggest Loser” weight loss competition at ProCare Therapy and Fitness in Montrose, while Lewis lost 16 pounds.

The two were a part of a program at ProCare featuring 12 participants who were competing against one another to see who could lose the most weight.

Barankovich said he got involved in the program because after losing about 60 pounds last year, his weight loss had reached a plateau.

“I wasn’t losing any more weight and couldn’t seem to reach my goal,” Barankovich said. “And my wife came here (ProCare) already, so I figured I’d share the experience with her.”

Barankovich said he was pleased with his experience in the competition.

“Even over the holidays I was able to lose weight,” Barankovich said.

Lewis said he was also pleased with her results in the competition.

“I got into the contest to get fit, and I’m happy with my results,” Lewis said. “But I’m by no means finished.”

The group was coached by physical therapy technician Melissa Smith, who was pleased with the group, which lost more than 100 pounds combined.

“The goal is to get everyone feeling better and getting results,” Smith said. “And doing it in a group keeps them going. It was great throughout the program how many times I heard them say, ‘I feel good.’”

Travis Barnes, who is C.O.O. of Fitness for ProCare said that the program works so well because of accountability.

“When people lose weight as a group, they feel accountable to one another,” Barnes said. “And it keeps them motivated.”

Barnes said the process featured three types of goals, including short term, long term and process goals.

He explained that a long term goal would be to lose 20 to 30 pounds, while a short term goal would be to lose a few pounds per week. An example of a process goal would be to stop drinking wine, Barnes said.

He also explained that the contest is based on relative body weight loss, and not individual pounds.

“We do it that way so that everyone can compete,” Barnes said. “It’s based on individual results.”

ProCare started another Biggest Loser competition on Feb. 7, and is still accepting new signups. For more information, call 278-1101.
