Coyote hunt attracts crowd

A near record 817 hunters turned out for the 13th Annual District 9 Northeast Pennsylvania Trappers Association Coyote Hunt and brought in 53 wild dogs with Bill Corry taking the top honors for the heaviest animal over the weekend at 51.7 pounds.

He was awarded $2,000 along with the daily prize of $250 for the heaviest coyote taken on Sunday.

Corry’s male coyote was harvested inSullivanCountyusing a .22-250 rifle and dogs.

The hunt saw animals brought in from eight counties Friday through Sunday with weigh-ins at Triton Hose Company in Tunkhannock.

Steve Chesner took top Friday honors of $250 for his 42.5-pound coyote harvested inWyomingCountyout of 22 brought in that day.

Terry Rickard’s 41.6-pound coyote harvested in Wayne County was the largest of 17 brought in on Saturday.

Two year ago, the hunt brought in a record 59 coyotes.

Of the 52 coyotes taken this year, 30 were male.

Kyle Van Why, on hand to do some scientific sampling for the USDA Wildlife Services Unit, as he did two years ago, discounted any talk about the coyote population being down in the region.

“They’re out there,” he said.

District 9 director Bill Kalinauskis of Nicholson said that he was very definitely pleased with this year’s turnout and said that some hunters preferred a tracking snow, many of those who were successful had still conditions in which dogs could hear calls.

The breakdown of county of harvest was:Wyoming(12), Susquehanna (8), Luzerne (7), Sullivan (7),Wayne(7),Lackawanna(6),Bradford(4), and Pike (2).
