Locals defeated at Regionals

A pair of Blue Ridge wrestlers and one Elk Lake wrestler all fell short of earning a bid to the PIAA Class AA state championship with losses at the Class AA Northeast Regional Championship at Williamsport on Saturday.

Blue Ridge’s Zach Edwards (120) had the most success after losing to Troy’s Clint Vermilya in the quarterfinals, the sophomore grabbed a win by pin over Carmen Mauriello of Wyoming Area to advance to the consolation semifinals.

However, Edwards was defeated bySouthern Columbia’sKent Laneto be eliminated from the tournament.

Teammate Tom Maby (138) faced a pair of losses, first toNortheast Bradford’s Zachary Green in the quarterfinals, and then to Mifflinburg’s Alan Miller in the consolation quarterfinals.

Elk Lake’s Derrick Smith (145) was also eliminated from the tournament after two losses, first in the quarterfinals toLineMountain’s Adam Kritzer, and then to Meyers’ Darren Stucker.

Blue Ridgefinished 33rd in the team standings with 3 points while ElkLakefinished tied for last with no points. Mifflinburg finished tops with 100 points.

120: Clint Vermilya (Troy) dec. Zach Edwards (BR), 5-0; 138: Zachary Green (Northeast Bradford) major dec. Tom Maby (BR), 14-3; 145: Adam Kritzer (Line Mountain) dec. Derrick Smith (EL), 7-2.

Consolation Quarterfinals

120: Edwards (BR) pinned Carmen Mauriello (Wyoming Area), 2:22; 138: Alan Miller (Mifflinburg) pinned Maby (BR), :54; 145: Darren Stucker (Meyers) dec. Smith (EL), 7-4.

Consolation Semifinals

120: Kent Lane (Southern Columbia) dec. Edwards (BR), 6-0.
