Warrior spikers hitting courts

TheElkLakeboys’ varsity volleyball team is gearing up to hit the court for a new season under coach Mary Berg.

Last year the Warriors went 2-10 in the Lackawanna League, and are hoping to use returning talent to improve on their record.

However,ElkLakewill have to fill in spots in the lineup left by the graduation of Bo Bushnell, Chris O’Brien,Alex Routeand Mark Smurkowski.

Berg said she is encouraged by looking at last year’s junior varsity record of 7-5.

She said the junior varsity from last year is stepping into the varsity role this year.

“I’m hoping after looking at last year’s JV record that this group will be successful on varsity,” Berg said. “We’re hoping for a competitive year.”

Berg will use returning startersMelvin Route, a senior, and juniors Jared Berg, Dan Noldy and Aaron O’Brien to round out the warrior lineup.

New starters stepping up from junior varsity this year include juniors Cody Franssen and Aric Curry.

The Warriors will however face tough competition from District II champions Lackawanna Trail, along with a strongWestern Wayneteam.

Berg said that Route is an all-around great player and will serve as the team’s captain this year.

“We’ve got a group this year that have all played together before,” Berg said.

TheElkLakeboys’ varsity volleyball team is comprised of seniorMelvin Route, juniors Berg, Noldy, O’Brien, Franssen, Cury and Mason Maye and sophomores Christian Sprout, Brody Bushnell, Adam Curry and Drew Nonebacher.
