Meteors golf team contending in new division

Montrose Area’s golf team is coming off an 11-1 campaign last year, and are hoping to compete in a new division despite the loss of four starters.

Montrose, coached by Mike Zuba, graduated starters Casey O’Reilly, Matt Sobiech, Mason Legg and Jordan Smith after last year, but hope to rely on a pair of returning seniors and a sophomore.

The Meteors will look to returning seniors Lance Nealy and Katie Clark, along with sophomore Corey Morrison to provide a spark for the team.

“We lost four starters plus another did not come out, therefore we are trying to rebuild,” Zuba said. “It will be a very challenging year.”

With a new division, Zuba said the Meteors will not be the preseason favorite this year, and that the Montrose team will have their hands full withDunmore, Holy Cross,LakelandandMountain View.

Along with Nealy, Clark and Morrison, Zuba said he will look to many seniors and a few underclassmen on the squad that have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season.

The Montrose Area varsity golf team is comprised of seniors Nealy, Clark, Anthony Augenti, Tom Krupinski and Garrett Miller, junior Codi Benedict, sophomores Morrison, Bradley Wayman and Caleb Hoal and freshmen Michael Stewart and Austin Smith.

The Meteors begin their season on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at home againstMountain View, at3:30 p.m.
