Blue Ridge

Members of Blue Ridge’s National Honor Society are helping out the environment.

Samuel Brush, a senior, and members of NHS helped organize an e-cycling event on Saturday. The students invited members of the community to bring their old electronics to the school’s lower parking lot to be recycled. The old electronics will be donated to electronics manufacturers to be broken down, said Samuel. The old wiring, glass and plastics will be used to make new electronic devices.

“The group organized the event to help out the community and the world in any way they can,” said Samuel.

Samuel is also interested in music and acting. He has been accepted to Valley Forge Christian College and plans to become a pastor.

Elk Lake

Junior Patrick Sekely recently took part in the Skills USA state competition in Hershey.

The competition showcases carpentry, cosmetology, automotive and other career-centered trades.
Patrick’s group also included Jesse Gouin and Andrew Shumski competing in the carpentry shop level.

“We’ve had many other projects in our shop but we try to get the easiest topic and the one with the most community impact. This year we chose a community service project, which were dog houses we donated to the Montrose Dog Shelter,” Patrick said.

Patrick plans on entering the Marine Corps after graduation next year.

Forest City Regional

Students have options in the cafeteria, and Ellie Ennis hopes they will soon be based on her suggestions.

The junior helped submit several ideas to the cafeteria manager with her family consumer science class.
Her top choice? Chili and rice in a bread bowl.

“It’s kind of neat because when we have lunch, I get to say my class came up with what we’re eating for lunch,” she said.

Ellie is also involved with softball, student council and Future Business Leaders of America.

Montrose

There is a murder-mystery happening this spring at Montrose Area High School.

The school’s drama department will entertain the community with a staging of “Drop Dead.”

In the spring comedy, senior Mary Kate Robinson will play the role of Constance Crawford. Getting into character has required a lot of dedication on Mary Kate’s end.

“I spend several hours preparing, between actual play rehearsals and practicing on my own, ” she said. “My favorite part of being in the play is getting to do something I love.”

Susquehanna Community

Ray Polak is a self-taught guitarist and roller-coaster enthusiast.

The senior at Susquehanna hopes to some day design theme park rides. Recently, he performed at Susquehanna’s annual “Mocha Moose” variety show.

Ray is a member of the weightlifting club, Scholastic Scrimmage, Scholastic Bowl, National Honor Society and a parent involvement committee volunteer. During the summer months, he works for Ashling Construction.

After high school, he plans to go to college to receive a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Ray plans to then continue his education and receive a master’s degree.
