Susquehanna’s Stone Bridge Lions Club members, celebrated the club’s 65th anniversary on Saturday, May 25th at the Golden Oaks Golf Club, in Windsor, N.Y.
Also attending was District 14-H Governor William Metschulat; District Governor Elect Mark Kusma and First Vice District Governor Elect Joe Skinner; members of the Great Bend-Hallstead Lions Club and other guests.
The present club officers are: President Peter Niven; Vice President Caitlen Torre; Secretary Alice Deutsch; Treasurer PDG Leonard Kello. Board of Directors include: PDG Kello, Charles Glidden, Reno Montforte and Peter Niven.
Following the exchange of gifts by District Governor Metschulat and President Niven, which included a throw given to the district governor depicting all the Susquehanna landmarks, the program by Kello, ”Did You Know That?” was presented. The program reviewed how the club came to be and all about many past members and how they were known.
According to Kello, a group of Susquehanna residents met monthly to determine if there was a need to offer a helping hand to someone down on their luck. In 1946/47 a member of the Carbondale Lions Club visited the monthly meeting and urged the group to form a Lions Club in Susquehanna with Carbondale as the sponsor.
Since the club formed 65 years ago the list of good works has grown very lengthy. Several projects pertained directly to the school district and the support continues today with scholarships to graduating seniors and donations to the elementary school.
The club is also the charter organization for Troop and Pack 81, Boy Scouts of America as well as numerous other activities involving the young people of the Tri-Boro area/school community.
Eye care is a major project for Lions Club International so that area also receives generous donations, such as emergency eye operations; eye exams and glasses. The local club has been responsible for 15 eye donors.
The latest project was the purchase of a defibrillator and training for personnel using the equipment located in Schneider’s Market, the Shops Plaza. Home Care equipment is also made available when needed. Since 1948 the Stone Bridge Lions club has raised and distributed $275,000.
