2014 Meteors

BILL HEWES

BILL HEWES

Bill Hewes, Running back/linebacker, Senior
Coming off a solid spring where he helped lead Montrose to the Lackawanna Track Conference Division IV title, he has the explosive ability to make coach Lou Cella’s option offense effective.

“I am really pumped up. It’s crazy how intense our practices are and I am really eager to see how things work out,” Hewes said.

Scouting report
Speed and athleticism are Hewes’ main assets. In track and field, he combined the two to be one of the top hurdlers in District 2 Class AA. For this football season, he will be counted on to use those abilities to first and foremost get the Meteors running again on offense and more aggressive on defense.

Last season, he showed flashes of that ability when he ran for a team-high 659 yards and three touchdowns.
“He runs really hard. He runs well in between the tackles and guards. If we can block well for him and we can get him the ball, he can do well. He is an amazing kid. He has been at practice every day working hard.”

It is important in coach Cella’s triple-option offense that he teaches and is dedicated to, for the quarterback to be fearless, poised and determined. Pat Parks has experience after starting last season, however, he was used mostly as a throwing quarterback. His responsibilities will change dramatically as timing and running the ball is the new name of the game.

BACKS
In addition to Hewes, the Meteors also return running back Austin Cook, who will shift from a receiver where he had 38 yards receiving last season to a running back in the option offense. Bob Purdy is also expected to play a bigger role in the running game this season.

RECEIVERS
While never known as a pass-happy offensive team, Montrose will likely be drawing in the reigns even more now. Still, there are options in the passing game as Jack Fruehan returns with some experience as a receiver.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Montrose took a bit of a hit by graduation, losing LFC Division III first-team all-star Brenton Warner, along with three other starters. Matt Legg is the only returning player with experience. J.J. Heft is expected to have an impact this season. The Meteors do have some linemen depth.

DEFENSIVE LINE
The story is much the same on the defensive side. Only Legg returns, and while there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the new offense for Montrose, the more pressing issues will come on defense, especially on the line of scrimmage.

LINEBACKERS
The Meteors had a tough time against the run last season giving up an average of 232.9 yards per game on the ground, but Hewes and Fruehan both return with experience.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Defending the pass was not a strong suit for the Meteors last season. They gave up more than 130 yards per game. Both Parks and Cook started last season and are expected to help this unit improve.

KICKING
Montrose did attempt many extra points last season, but it will have to replace starter Troy Ely.
