County proposed 2017 budget available for review

The county’s proposed 2017 budget carries is about $100,000 more than the current year. The budget is available for review in the chief clerk’s office and also on the county website.
The commissioners will likely adopt the proposed budget at the December 14 meeting.
Audience member Patricia Aiken asked if the proposed budget took into consideration any lawsuits that have been filed against the county. And questions followed from audience member Vera Scroggins about any lawsuits or ongoing investigations.
Commissioner Alan Hall said any legal actions against the county would be on file in the prothonotary’s office. As for investigations, Hall said that information would have to be reviewed with the county solicitor to see what could be disclosed to the public at this time.
He did say that the county faced a suit regarding Clean and Green rollbacks from eight to 10 years ago; and three incidents were under investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission – one “extremely old” he said and the other two beginning earlier this year.
The commissioners also faced questions about the proposed development of an incinerator in New Milford Twp. The project, according to a release put out by Tyler Corners on Monday, is on hold.
At the meeting and prior to that notification, Hall said the company would have to address several issues and need exemptions from DEP.
He advised that the public should stay engaged on the potential development.
In other business, Nov. 15 was proclaimed America Recycles Day in Susquehanna County.
The salary board amended and approve the 2016 miscellaneous compensation schedule to add student election observers. Those students will receive $25 for attending the training, and $50 for participation on Election Day.
The county commissioners meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 23.
