Montrose teams score ‘Red Card’ wins

Montrose got back on the winning track in Lackawanna League boys soccer action at their Red Card Against Cancer benefit game turning back Gregory the Great, 3-1.
Tyler Andre, Theodore Lubash, and Tracy Kerr each scored goals for the Meteors and Ethan Hitchcock recorded seven saves in the goal.
Cameron and Leonard Johnson each scored two goals as Western Wayne dispatched Forest Cit,y 5-1. Corey Daniels scored the lone Forester goal and Goalkeeper Carmine Gigliotti earned nine saves.
Gary Snipes scored the first of his four goals 54 seconds into the game and Lakeland cruised past Mountain View 9-1.
Zach Polovitch scored the lone goal for Mountain View on its only shot attempt as the Eagles were outshot 27-1.
Mountain View Goalkeepers Conner Richmond (1) and Preston Petts (4) recorded five saves.
Elk Lake broke open a 2-1 game with three goals after halftime and shut down Holy Cross on its way to a 5-1 victory.
Nate Preston led the way with two goals, one on an assist from Joe McAleer. Also scoring for the Warriors were Gabe Spadine, Alec and Kyle Bradish. Goalie Jake Kelley recorded 10 saves.
Blue Ridge used a 38-7 shot advantage to blow by Mid Valley 4-0. Tommy Gudykunst led the charge with two goals and Ryan Mills and Ben Gudykunst also notched goals for the Raiders.
All four goals were assisted as Ben Bleck recorded two assists as Kaleb Folk and Gerald Welsted each had one. Goalkeeper Eric Hall recorded six saves for the shutout
In girls action, Montrose shut out Dunmore, 7-0, in the first half of the Red Card Against Cancer doubleheader with the Montrose boys’ team.
Maddy Gilhool recorded three goals, two in the first half, and an assist. Also getting in the scoring column for the Lady Meteors were Tangi Smith, Harper Andre, Brianna Spence, and Chalice Guyette.
Spence, Cici Adams, and Rachel Sorenson each recorded an assist. Goalkeeper Katie Puterbaugh managed three saves as Montrose outshot the Lady Bucks 24-3.
Two days later the Lady Meteors won their 11th straight, shutting out West Scranton in a rain-shortened game.
Gilhool led the way scoring six goals and assisting on two others. Spence contributed three goals along with five assists and Adams added a goal while Guyette and Liz Lathrop chipped in with an assist by each.
Montrose finished the sweep of the week when they traveled to Varden to take on Western Wayne Thursday evening.
After a slow start, Gilhool scored the first of her five goals 10 minutes into the game and the floodgates opened as the Lady Meteors scored five unanswered goals in a 13-minutes span to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
Montrose would tack on four more goals in the second half to prevail 9-0.
Gilhool also had three assists on the evening and Spence added three goals. Adams had the other Montrose goal and Gabby Davis contributed two assists.
Guyette and Lindsey Coy also had an assist, while Puterbaugh earned four saves.
Western Wayne’s Cassidy Asinski scored the only goal of the second half a little over a minute in and the Lady Wildcats held off Mountain View the rest of the way to defeat the Lady Eagles, 2-1, and avenge a first-half loss in league play.
Marressa Salansky scored the Mountain View goal on a feed from Rebecca Plomchok as the Lady Eagles opened the scoring eight minutes into the game. Asinkski led Rylee Sheehan for the score to knot the game eight minutes later. Goalkeeper Sydney Newhart garnered eight saves for Mountain View.
