Keller, Friedenberg seek 12th District seat

In a twist for this year’s primary, voters will also cast ballots in a special election to fill the spot in the U.S. House of Representatives 12th Congressional District vacated by Republican incumbent Tom Marino.

Marino abruptly announced his resignation from that post after just three weeks into his new term, at first saying he was taking a job in the private sector before later attributing it to health problems.

In January, Gov. Tom Wolf scheduled the special election to replace Marino to coincide with the May 21 Primary.

Marc Friedenberg, a Democrat and professor at Penn State University, challenged Marino last November, taking 34 percent of the vote. He is again seeking election to the seat.

Fred Keller, a Republican who’s represented parts of Snyder and Union counties in the state House since 2011, is the party’s nominee.

Keller was selected at a GOP convention from a field of 14 candidates after four rounds of voting.

For 25 years, he worked as plant manager at a cabinet company.
