Susquehanna County Coming Events!

Yoga, archery, story time and rockin’ hike on tap at Salt Springs Park

Salt Springs Park in Franklin Forks is bustling with events this weekend – including yoga, archery, story time and a hike featuring the park’s amazing geological structures.

Yoga in the Park, Saturday, May 20, 9 a.m. Join us for a Vinyasa Flow (Yoga) Practice along Silver Creek, led by Ramona Lena. Beginners and children are welcome. Bring a yoga mat or blanket and drinking water. Register by phone (570-967-7275) or email (EEC@saltspringspark.org). Fee: $5; families, $15; members, free.

Archery for Beginners, Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. till Noon (also 6/10, 7/15, 8/12, and 9/16). Our beginner’s program is based on the National Archery in Schools Program, which makes it easy for anyone to learn. We provide the equipment, and you bring your focus. All ages are welcome. This is a great family activity taught by NASP-certified instructor Diane Wurth. Held beside the Dairy Barn, beyond the parking lot. Fee: $5; $15/family.

Little Naturalist Story Time, Saturday, May 20, 1 p.m. Meet in the Wheaton House front lawn by the Little Library Bench. Joe Toman will read a nature-themed story and then follow up with a short activity or craft. This is appropriate for kids aged 3 to 6 years old, although all children are welcome. Fee: Free-will donation.

Rocky Run Hike, Saturday, May 20, 2 p.m.    Rocks along the trail can be our nemesis, yet they hold secrets from long ago. Have you noticed the geological structures in Susquehanna County? Aaron McNamara, with the Susquehanna County Conservation District, will help us uncover some of the rocks’ secrets and shed some light on our local landscape. We will start with the Gorge Trail and talk about the rock formations along Fall Brook (a 1-mile loop). Then, for those who are interested, we will climb to a “rocky run” along the Cliff Trail to explore some more amazing geological structures. Fee: $5; $15/family; members, free.

Events planned in Forest City this weekend

Forest City will be busy this weekend with several events on Sunday, May 21.

The Second Annual “Forest City Teague Trail Trot 5K and Community Walk”, sponsored by the GFCBA, kicks off at 10 am this coming Sunday, May 21, 2023. The 5K race will head out promptly at 10 am from the D & H Trail Head in Forest City, with the “Community Fun Walk” to follow immediately thereafter.

The 5K race is a “chipped and timed” race, assisted by the Scranton Running Company. Awards for the 5K will be presented for 7 age groups, male and female categories. One mile- walkers are not timed, but 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded. DJ Dennis Sosa will be on hand for a festive race day atmosphere.

Registration remains open through the GFCBA website at visitforestcitypa.com or visit Run Sign Up and search “Forest City Teague Trail Trot.” Online registration remains open until 5 pm on May 20th. Day of race registrations will be accepted, $35 for runners and $20 for community walkers. Commemorative race t-shirts are included in the race registration. The GFCBA dedicates the funds from this race toward community projects that connect Forest City’s outdoor experience to our downtown.

After the 5K, hopefully you’ve reserved your tickets for Browndale Fire Company’s annual spring barbeque! The fire company has pre-sold 700 tickets. This is one of several fundraisers for the 110-year-old fire department, which contribute toward expenses such as firefighting equipment, utilities, fuel and normal building operating expenses. Hopefully you have your meal ordered, but if you missed out, consider donating to their upcoming fund drive, so they may continue to provide services for the Greater Browndale and Forest City community.

Finally, it’s time for the vendor fairs at Kennedy Park this summer! Forest City Parks and Recreation have scheduled three events on Sunday May 21st, Sunday July 16th and Sunday September 17th. The park will be open and vendors ready for the public from 10 am to 4 pm. It’s a fabulous way to spend your Sunday, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the park and browsing the vast array of local businesses and services.

We hope to see everyone out this weekend – at one or all of these events. So much to do and experience in Forest City.
