Honesdale wanted to put its slow start to the season behind it quickly.
And Jesus Rivero provided just the spark the Hornets needed.
Bolting 92 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter, Rivero gave Honesdale a lead it never relinquished in a 21-8 win over Montrose on Friday.
The Hornets finally celebrated a win, snapping a 21-game losing streak.
The game between winless teams got off to a very sloppy start as the teams turned the ball over on three first-quarter possessions, with Honesdale losing two fumbles.
Then Rivero got free and Honesdale got going.
Montrose was on the move late in the second quarter. Ethan Jones, who finished with 180 yards rushing, had a 10-yard and 12-yard run as the Meteors moved to the 11.
But then, Maleik Torres stepped in front of a pass at the goal line and sprinted 100 yards for a touchdown, giving Honesdale a 15-0 lead.
Coming out in the second half, Montrose turned the ball over as Chavez Lill recovered a fumble. The Meteors had trouble the entire game, fumbling eight times and losing four.
One play after Alex Dietrich had an 18-yard run, Rivero scored for 3 yards out to make it 21-0.
Rivero led Honesdale’s rushing attack with 128 yards.
Montrose responded on its next possession. Jones carried the ball 11 of the 12 plays, including a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down that pulled the Meteors to within 21-8 after he added the 2-point conversion.
After Kurt Kimsey gave Montrose back possession, recovering a fumble, Jonathan Gillow recovered another Meteors’ fumble on the next play.
