Treibel named Montrose athlete of week

Montrose Area girls’ tennis team co-captain Kayla Triebel dominated her position on the team with a record of 10-2.

She has been named Athlete of the Week for her dedication and effort to tennis. She plays tennis year round and has been named Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row.

 “(Playing year-round) benefited my game by making me stronger. And the more I played the better I got at tennis. Playing year-round made it so I wouldn’t forget the skills I had for tennis. Also, when I need to work on something it helped me because I had a lot of time to work on it,” Triebel said.

Triebel paired up with senior Courtney Hinds and they made it to the semifinals of the PIAA District 2 doubles championships. They were the No. 3-seeded team, defeating Riverside, Holy Cross, and Scranton Prep throughout the matches. They lost in the state quarterfinalists, but they battled hard, according to Coach Jim Hinds.

 “My most memorable moment was district week, playing doubles with Courtney Hinds (and) making it up day by day to the semifinals and winning third place. I liked those days because every time we were winning a match it made me feel like I’m getting better and better at tennis,” Triebel said.

Triebel has played tennis for four years. She played winter tennis, she was student coach of the boys’ team, and she has only lost to one player in league play. Triebel has a record of only one loss in her junior year and two losses in her senior year.

“Tennis is a sport which rewards the player that can be patient and consistent until the moment is presented to be aggressive. In order to win matches against the better players, you have to be able to do this under pressure of a few points deciding on a match. Kayla has always been able to play a match point, deciding point or any other point in exactly the same way, without hesitation.” Coach Hinds said.

Triebel plans to continue playing tennis in the future.

 “I do plan on playing tennis in college, and I’m thinking about going to play at BCC (Broome Community College),” Triebel said.
