EL runners named All-Region

Luke Jones

Elk Lake’s Mike Bedell, Luke Jones, Maria Trowbridge and Elizabeth Trowbridge have been named to the Scranton Times-Tribune All-Region cross country team for 2010.

Bedell led the Warriors to a 22-0 record and Lackawanna League title, then helped capture the PIAA Class AA championship.

He won all six of the meets he ran during the regular season and set a course record at Valley View in 15:53 to win a showdown race by two seconds over the Cougars’ Aaron Wilkinson.

and earn a state medal.

He also finished 28th in the Paul Short Invitational Brown race in 16:41. This is Bedell’s second All-Region berth, and also named boys’ Runner of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Jones, a sophomore, was one half of the Warriors’ 1-2 punch with Bedell. He had one win, five seconds and one fifth during the Lackawanna League regular season.

He won the District 2 Class AA race in 16:45, and finished 17th in the PIAA Class A race in 16:59, earning a state medal and helping Elk Lake capture the state title.

Elizabeth Trowbridge

Jones also led a 1-2-3 finish with teammates Bedell and Jeff Horvath at the Elmira, N.Y., Invitational in September, winning in 17:48.

He was 32nd at the Paul Short Invitational Brown race in 16:49. This is Jones’ first All-Region berth.

 Maria Trowbridge, a junior at Elk Lake, helped the Lady Warriors go 20-0 and win the Lackawanna League title.

She had five wins, one second and one fifth during the regular season. Trowbridge also placed fifth in the District 2 Class AA race in 20:14.

Trowbridge earned a state medal finishing sixth in 19:35, leading the Elk Lake girls to a PIAA Class AA team title.

She also finished 23rd at the Paul Short Invitational race in 19:36. This is her third All-Region berth.

Elizabeth Trowbridge, a freshman, posted six top-five finishes during the Lackawanna League regular season, including three second-place efforts.

She finished third in the District 2 Class AA race in 19:33 and contributed to the Lady Warriors’ state championship performance by placing 11th in 19:48 at the PIAA Class AA race and earning a state medal.

Trowbridge also finished 45th at the Paul Short Invitational Brown Race in 20:10. It’s her first All-Region berth.

Walker, Lewis named All-Region

Megan Walker

Mountain View’s Megan Walker and Montrose’s Alex Lewis have been named to the 2010 Scranton Times-Tribune girls’ soccer all-region team.

Walker, a senior midfielder, racked up six goals and three assists to earn her first berth to the All-Region team.

She was a 2009 Lackawanna Soccer League first-team all-star in the North Division.

“She had her maturation year this year,” coach Errol Mannick said. “She really matured into not only a great player, but she matured into a leader of the team more than anything else. She played 100 percent. She gives it her all.”

Alex Lewis

Lewis, a senior defensive player, had three goals and three assists, and has been an all-star defender for the past two years, and this year earns her first all-region selection.

“She saved our butts many a time this season. We’re sure going to miss her,” coach John Cherundolo said. “At Montrose, we’ve always prided ourselves on tough defense and she’s one of the best. For the last two years, every time it looks like the other team is going to score, out of nowhere comes this streak of red hair.”

Kempa, Willchock honored

Dan Kempa

Susquehanna Saber football players Dan Kempa and Mark Willchock have been named to the Scranton Times-Tribune All-Region football team.

Kempa, a senior, was honored as a defensive back who helped lead the Sabers to an LFC Division III title.

He had three interceptions and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

At quarterback, he ran for 1,132 yards and 17 touchdowns and threw for 761 yards and 13 touchdowns. He finished with 3,351 yards rushing and 51 TDs in his career.

Mark Willchock

Willchock, a senior, was honored as an offensive guard. He is a two-year starter for the Sabers who averaged 224.6 yards rushing per game this season.

He was a standout on defense as a tackle, and helped lead the Sabers to a 9-2 record and the LFC Division III championship.

MV’s Kazmierski All-Region 

KAYLA KAZMIERSKI

Mountain View senior Kayla Kazmierski has been named to the Scranton Times-Tribune All-Region girls’ volleyball team for 2010.

Kazmierski helped lead Mountain View into the District 2 Class A championship game.

She led her team with 209 kills and 68 blocks. Kazmierski also contributed 54 aces and had a .238 hitting percentage for the Eagles.

Hinds named All-Region

 

 

COURTNEY HINDS

 

Montrose senior Courtney Hinds was named to the Scranton Times-Tribune All-Region girls’ tennis team for 2010.

 

 

This season Hinds posted a 10-5 overall record in singles, and in District 2 Class AA singles lost to Kendra Croker in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-2.

Hinds also helped lead Montrose to a record of 8-4 in the Lackawanna League Division II. She teamed with Kayla Trieble to reach the District 2 Class AA semifinals in doubles.

 

Hinds is a Lackawanna League Coaches’ First-team Class AA all-star. First All-Region selection.

 

MV’s Adams earns honor

Greg Adams

Mountain View senior fullback Greg Adams has been named to the 2010 Scranton Times-Tribune boys’ soccer All-Region team.

Adams had one assist and led the Mountain View team through the District 2 Class A playoffs and to the PIAA Class A state quarterfinal.

“He consistently used all he had to make himself the best soccer player he could be,” coach Roger Thomas said. “Through this, and his willingness to be coached, he was an influential leader, encouraging all on this team to the success we ultimately had.
