Shippensburg University track and field jumper Cody DeBoer, a Montrose graduate, is heading to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Mar. 10 in Albuquerque, N.Mex.

The Shippensburg Raiders men’s team won the 2011 Penn State Athletic Conference championship as DeBoer had an impressive finish in the long jump.

DeBoer, a sophomore, seeded eighth in the conference, shattered teammate Herman Kirkland’s school record with a jump of 24 feet and one-quarter inch on Saturday, which automatically qualified him for the National Championships and ranks him fifth in Division II.

DeBoer’s record lasted for all of a couple minutes, though, as Kirkland hit the board shortly thereafter and surpassed that jump with a new hallmark.

However, IUP’s Nafee Harris, a three-time national champion in the long jump, posted a mark of 24 feet, 6 and one-half inches that appeared to be the victorious mark.

Also at the PSAC championships, Sarah Kimsey, who was a teammate of DeBoer’s at Montrose and is now a freshman at Kutztown University, took seventh in the triple jump at 35 feet and 10 and three-quarters inches.
