Board adjusts BR superintendent’s contract

The Blue Ridges chool board approved an adjustment to the superintendent’s 2010-11 compensation and 2011-14 contract agreement at the Monday, Oct. 24 meeting.

Superintendent Robert McTiernan was hired by the district in late August 2010. Business manager Loren Small said the adjustments were made Monday to make McTiernan’s contract tie it in with the school’s business year.

The board, Small said, also basically reset the clock on the superintendent’s three-year contract which now runs to 2014.

The board also acknowledged tenure for Harold T. Allen; and approved Betty Jean Carey,New Milford, and Karen DeMartino, Hallstead, as non-instructional substitutes.

Updates were given on the status of projects on the district campus during the board’s workshop which was held immediately following the business meeting.

The installation of new playground equipment, purchased by the elementary PTO, is slated to begin this weekend.

The replacement of the exterior cafeteria and middle school entrance doors is expected to take place at the end of next week.

The stairs leading to the track will be replaced in the spring.

Facilities and grounds chair Harold Empett said the district is beginning to move into “winter mode.”

In athletics, board vice president Christina Cosmello said a coach is still needed for eighth grade boys’ basketball. She said one person has expressed interest in coaching the eighth grade girls’ team.

The board hopes to fill those coaching slots before the start of the season.

Health and wellness committee chair Priscinda Gaughan announced the committee will meet Thursday, Nov. 3 at3:50 p.m.

At the recent PASB conference, board president Alan Hall received an award for “Outstanding Service in the Northeast Region” from the association.

Hall also said school vouchers were still on the table inHarrisburgtargeting failing schools. “We need to make sure the effects are limited on us,” Hall said.

Hall announced the board met in an executive session prior to the meeting on a personnel issue requiring legal advice. He said the board hoped to make a determination on the issue at the next board meeting, scheduled for Nov. 7.
